Vashi GRP has taken CCTV footage from Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane and Vashi, trying to trace the family of the male child who was abandoned in the Thane-bound train on Friday

Despite scanning CCTV footage from various stations, the Vashi Government Railway Police (GRP) has not found any clues that would help trace the family of the five-day-old baby who was abandoned in a local train on Friday. The infant is currently under the care of Nerul's Vishwa Balak Kendra in sector 12.

Speaking to mid-day, Parshuram Karyakate, senior inspector of Vashi GRP said, "Once the train halts at Vashi station, there is barely any time when compartments are completely empty. One lady commuter has come forward saying that she saw a woman at Turbhe, holding and feeding a baby. However, since she herself got off at Sanpada, she doesn't know where the mother went. We've taken CCTV footage from Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane and Vashi, but no concrete clues have been picked up from it yet."

A hawker who sells clips in the trans-harbour route also claims noticing a woman in the same train to Vashi, feeding the child.

According to police officials, they are planning to publish the child's photo in newspapers, hoping his claimants would come forward. They also plan to check municipal hospitals of any recent deliveries of baby boys and slum areas nearby.

The police remarked that the child was extremely calm and playful, even when he was taken to the NMMC hospital for medical examination.

A coordinator at the Vishwa Balak Kendra said, "The boy was brought to us on Friday evening. There are many possibilities why he was abandoned. It is even possible that the mother or a relative of the infant was waiting close by to see if the child is taken away by someone or not."

Vashi GRP has registered a case under section 317 (abandonment of child under 12 years) of the Indian Penal Code.
