Mumbai, Sharad Pawar, general elections, 40 lakh new voters, NCP Chief
NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Friday finally called it a day, filing nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha and withdrawing himself from the drama of Lok Sabha elections. The Union Agriculture Minister, however, refused to buy reports of a strong anti-UPA wave in the country, saying the scenario was still unclear, and the legions of new voters would play a crucial role in the coming elections.
Speaking to the media after filing his nomination papers along with fellow NCP candidate Majid Memon, the maverick politician corroborated a report that was published in MiD DAY earlier this month, which had predicted that the registration of new voters would play a crucial role in the approaching general elections (Rs 40 lakh new voters could swing biggest ever poll,' January 7).
MiD DAY's report on January 7
Around 40 lakh new voters have registered in the state for the election; compared to the trends in the last few elections, the figure is mammoth. Pawar said that the new regional parties would also play a crucial role in the formation of the new government at the Centre: "One has to accept the strength of regional parties in their respective states. Their help will be needed for formation of the next government."
He said that the highlight of the approaching general elections would be the participation of new voters in large numbers, and the winning combination would benefit from the support of these new voters.
