4 students die in car crash near Karla

Four students died while one was seriously injured in a fatalaccident at Karla on old Pune-Mumbai highway, after the driver lost control of the car, which jumped the divider and rammed into a tempo coming from the opposite direction around 3 am yesterday


The deceased have been identified as Rohit Shashikant Shukla (23) of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Ankit Kamlesh Garg (22), Aditya Mahavir Agarwal (23) - both from Sirohi in Rajasthan -- and Garima Ajaykumar Goel (22) of Chandigarh.

Their friend, Ishika Singrao (22) from Jaipur in Rajasthan, survived with serious injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital for further treatment. All the youngsters were first-year management students from a private institute at Wakad. They were heading towards Lonavala to enjoy the weekend, said police.

Lonavala police are questioning tempo driver Anis Mehboob Shaikh (48) of Kandivli about the incident. Traffic on the highway was also affected for a few hours. The IRB staff and Lonavala cops rushed to the spot and cleared the lanes of damaged vehicles after which normalcy was restored on the highway.

According to assistant police inspector Sandeep Yede, it is not yet clear who was driving the car. "Rohit, Aditya and Garima died on the spot. Ankit succumbed to his injuries while he was being taken to the hospital. After the accident, Shaikh informed the police about it," Yede said.u00a0
