Two South African women students travelling in a car were lucky to escape without injuries when an ST bus hit their vehicle as they tried to take a U-turn at SRPF Chowk on the Pune-Solapur highway in Hadapsar at 1.40 am today.

The State Transport bus hit the bumper of the car and damaged the area around the headlights. The women said they were from Puda, a place in South Africa, and were students of MIT College in the city. They said they were residing in a flat in Aundh.

The women would not give any more information, saying they wanted to call the embassy first.

ST bus driver Vaman Kenjale said the bus was not speeding. He said the car took a sudden turn into the BRTS route, which took him by surprise and he could not avoid brushing against the front of the car.

The Hadapsar police reached the accident spot after 20 minutes, but it was slow going for them as they were unable to understand the women's language. At the time of going to press, police formalities were still on.
