Encouraged by the results of a surprise drive on Sinhgad Road on September 19, in which 296 motorists were fined for violating traffic rules, the traffic police held a special drive from 10 am to 1 pm yesterday. They targeted Tilak Road, Alka Talkies Chowk, Good Luck Chowk, Fergusson College road, Dyaneshwar Paduka Chowk and Agriculture College junction and a separate drive was also carried out on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway.

A team of 124 traffic policemen managed to catch 2,817 traffic violators in a span of just three hours. Traffic DCP Sarang Awad said, "The surprise drives were carried out mainly in congested areas of the city, which are prone to traffic jams, especially during peak hours. We want to make an impact on the mindset of the citizens and educate them to take traffic rules seriously."

"The drive carried out today (Tuesday) was held in two separate places from 10 am to 1 pm. The first was from Tilak Road to Agriculture College Junction where 2,217 traffic violators were caught. Another 600 traffic offenders were nabbed on the Pune-Ahemdnagar highway," he added.

"I had asked the traffic DCP to identify the vulnerable areas where the number of traffic violations were relatively higher. This helped us to get hold of many traffic violators. The offenders were guilty of jumping traffic signals, talking on mobile phones while driving, cutting lanes, sporting fancy illegal number plates and riding triple-seat on motorcycles. We are planning to carry out such drives regularly."
