Sainiks. Thus, she had to back out from the case. However, her earlier decision to defend Qasab has evoked mixed reactions from the fraternity in the city.

Dr Shahsikala Gurpur, principal of Symbiosis Law School where Waghmare had studied law, said, "As an institution, we inculcate values like professionalism and commitment in our students. Also, we respect their independent decisions as they have the liberty to defend the constitutional rights of any individual."

But when asked whether it's right on Shiv Sena's part to protest against Waghmare's decision, she refused to comment.

Advocate Nandakumar Phadke, chairman of Maharashtra and Goa Bar Council's Executive Committee, has strongly criticised the way protests were carried out. "It is pertinent to note that it was the court which had appointedu00a0 Waghmare to defend Qasab and she was only complying with the orders.

Pressurising her to withdraw from the case was uncalled for," Phadke said. He added that Sena's protest against Waghmare's decision to defend Qasab was quite sad and any citizen who believes in the constitution will be against such acts.

However, Advocate Bipin Patole, the ex-president of Pune Bar Association, feels otherwise. "No Indian advocate should accept Qasab's wakalatnama as he has attacked our motherland," Patole said.
