Carpet bombing by B2 fighter jets, cluster bombs, years of ethnic conflict, towns and villages ravaged by years of war and hostile weather could not scare them.

But, a team of engineers from Kabul found themselves no match for the mosquitoes in Delhi.

The Afghan group was in India as part of a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) financed programme for a week-long training at the National Power Training Institute, Faridabad.

These engineers are being given the know how to maintain the big power projects that are being constructed in Afghanistan.

The first batch of the engineers was trained in August while the second batch is being trained at Bangalore.

The engineers spoke no language except their native Pashto and, therefore, the USAID provided them an interpreter to communicate while on their stay in Delhi.

The interpreter told MiD DAY that though they enjoyed their stay in India but missed visiting Taj Mahal and other tourist attractions due to their tight schedule.

"They are very interactive people. They are fond of India but could not appreciate the spicy food here. All of them complained about the weather and mosquitoes," said Rajni Prakash, the interpreter.u00a0 A senior government official agreed that their schedule was such that they could not visit places of tourist interest. "Next time we will try to keep this issue in mind. These people are our guests and they must go back with good memories of India."u00a0u00a0u00a0
