IIFT authorities threaten students; ask them not to speak about ragging incidents

The authorities at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) are in damage-control mode, after MiD DAY exposed how some drunken seniors at the reputed institute ragged a fresher. On Friday, the institute held an emergency meeting of all students asking them to solve such issues internally rather than going to the media.

Sandeep Singh (name changed to protect his identity), a second year student at IIFT, said after the incident was made public, the college authorities circulated an email informing students about the emergency meeting.

"We were asked to gather at the seminar hall. At the meeting, the authorities threatened us with dire consequences if anyone was found guilty of leaking the story to the media. They said such incidents were an internal matter of the college. And any student having a problem related to anything with the college should directly contact the concerned authorities. They promised us the matter will be immediately solved," Singh added.

To avoid incidents of ragging, security at hostels for junior and senior students has been increased. "The hostel warden has also been asked to be more vigilant," said a member of the college management, wishing anonymity.

In the first week of July, a First Year MBA (International Business) student was allegedly ragged by about eight seniors. The fresher was made to run around the college for more than half-an-hour and was asked to stand in front of the girl's hostel and shout.

In an email, the harassed student's father said, "My son rang me up half-an-hour ago, complaining he was harassed by some senior students. He said the seniors were drunk and asked him and a few other juniors vulgar questions. Later, the seniors made my son and his batchmates run around the college and shout outside the
girl's hostel."
