With the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) paying a weeklong tribute to late actor Farooq Shaikh by screening someof his best known films, the director of the iconic play âTumhariMarita, recalled their resolution to stage the show at the FTII campus.
Feroz Abbas Khan directs the acclaimed play, starring Farooq Shaikh and Shabana Azmi. He said, "We were planning to stage the show at the FTII, as we all are very attached to this place and have fond memories of the campus. Though we had not finalized on any date, Farooq was excited over this development, as he was fond of the institute. But, unfortunately it could not be realised, as he left us unexpectedly."
FTII tribute
Meanwhile, the FTII has organised screenings of some of the actor's top films like âShatranj ke Khiladi', âKatha', âGaram Hawa', âUmrao Jaan' and âChashme Baddoor'. The director of FTII, D J Narain, informed about the weeklong screenings yesterday.
"The film industry has suffered a huge loss. Farooq Shaikh was a wonderful actor and a great human being. He will be remembered for his intense and meaningful roles. Hence through this weeklong movie screenings, we are trying to show his greatest works to our students," said Narain.
The movie screenings have been organised along with the NFAI (National Film Archive of India) and will be screened exclusively for the students of the institute along with the NFAI Film Circle Members.
Talking about the veteran actor's fondness for FTII, Narain said, "Many people considered him as an FTII alumnus, but he was not. Shaikh certainly had some kind of association with the institute as he worked with many FTII alumni like Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi.
He enjoyed the warmth of the FTII community." The films will be screened at the FTII main theatre. The institute is also planning to invite actors who worked alongside the legendary actor to interact with the students.
