Ashura observed on the 10th day of Muharram, marks a significant mourning period for Muslims, particularly within the Shia community
The day commemorates the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, who was killed in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE
The period holds deep historical and religious significance as it symbolises the struggle against tyranny and injustice
Shiite Muslims take part in 'tatbir,' a form of self flagelaltion, to mark Ashura on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram
Tazia processions were also organised across the city today
In view of the processions, Mumbai Traffic Police had issued a traffic advisory for areas of Sion, Mahim and Bandra, closing various routes for entry
Vehicles are being divereted to alternate routes from 3pm today till midnight
