The International Day of the Girl is commemorated annually on October 11. Several programmes are held globally on the occasion to celebrate the girl child 

The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl is ‘Girls’ vision for the future’

The idea behind this year’s theme is to highlight the urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future, the United Nations stated

The celebrations took off in the presence of United Nations Population Fund Executive Director Dr Natalia Kanem and other dignitaries

Along with the United Nations Population Fund officials, activists from the Girls Count, and Dalit Mahila Vikas Mandal were present for the event 

Asia Pacific Regional Director PO Smith was also present at the event

To commemorate the day, kids participated in street plays named 'Mazhya Karyaan Maja Adhikar' and 'Lake Ladki Cha Ghanal' 

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights, UN stated

The decision to commemorate October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face around the world was taken in 2011
