The Central and Western Railways have introduced several festive special trains to North India for passengers visiting their hometowns during Diwali
On Sunday, October 27, around 3 am, a stampede occurred at Bandra Terminus after passengers rushed to board the Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express
According to GRP, the passengers rushed to get on the Antyodaya Express after the Gorakhpur-bound train that they were supposed to board was delayed by 16 hours
The condition of at least one passenger is said to be critical
Meanwhile, at LTT, the police personnel manned the crowd to ensure no untoward incident takes place
The Bandra Terminus and LTT witness heavy footfall of passengers throughout the year, with the crowds only increasing during the festive season
While the police personnel at the stations man the crowd, often the passengers break the queues to rush into the trains for a seat
On Sunday, too, the police personnel were manning the crowd at Bandra Terminus. However, the Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express came two hours early before its scheduled time. Thus, the passengers whose trains were delayed, rushed to get into the Express
Indian Railways had earlier decided to run nearly 6,000 special trains to help more than one crore passengers get home for Diwali and Chhath festivals
Additional general coaches have been added to 108 trains, the railways said
