Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday inaugurated Kopri railway over bridge. Incidentally, CM Shinde is celebrating his birthday on February 10. The opening of the bridge will decongest the traffic at the border of Mumbai and Thane district. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has upgraded the 2+2 lane Rail Over Bridge (ROB) to 4+4 lane at Kopri in Thane.

According to the MMRDA, the entire cost of the 784 meters long and  37.04 metre wide bridge has been borne by MMRDA. The bridge portion over the railway crossing is constructed by Central Railway for which MMRDA funded them

The vehicular traffic coming from 5+5 lane Eastern Express Highway on 2+2 lane Kopri bridge is maximum during the peak hours. Kopri had become bottle-neck during peak hours, because crossing Kopri bridge was a tough task. After the widening of Kopri bridge the border of Mumbai-Thane district is expected to be traffic congestion free

The newly opened bridge is likely to benefit small and heavy both types of vehicles on the Eastern Expressway

"Kopri Bridge is an imperative link connecting Mumbai and Thane districts. As the old bridge was narrow, it caused heavy traffic jams on both sides of the Eastern Expressway. Motorists were taking 30 to 40 mins to cover a few meters during peak hours," said SVR Srinivas, Metropolitan Commisioner, MMRDA

Srinivas said, Due to the new wide bridge, the passengers will now save their precious time and fuel. Along with this, there will be a big reduction in the traffic at Teen Hat Naka as well
