In the last few years, Mumbai has seen the trend of people celebrating the Maghi Ganesh Festival (the birth of Lord Ganesha) or Lord Ganesh Jayanti. The Maghi Ganeshotsav, is said to be an auspicious day which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha in Magh month (January – February). This year Maghi Ganeshotsav would be celebrated on January 25. The day is believed to be the birthday of Lord Ganesh.
The festival is also known as Magh Shukla Ganesh Jayanti, Magh Shukla Chaturthi, Tilkund Chaturthi, Maghi Ganesh Jayanti and Varad Chaturthi. According to the Hindu calendar, Ganesh Jayanti is celebrated on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha, which falls between January and February of the Gregorian calendar.
Mandals across Mmmbai as well as individuals bring the idols of Lord Ganesh to mark the Maghi Ganesh Festival. People perform special pujas during the festival.
Special prayers, rituals and pujas are held at mandals and Ganesha temples. Special offerings are performed on the day for peace and prosperity.
