Mumbai Mayor goes into self-quarantine as Maha CM warns of strict action against lockdown violators

Mumbai recorded 308 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, taking the tally to 3,032. With 1,553 fresh cases of coronavirus reported in the last 24 hours, the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in India reached 17,265, said Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Health and Family Welfare. Aggarwal said that the Health Ministry has expressed its views that India wants to work with G20 nations to develop the vaccine to combat COVID-19.

The centre also said that the COVID-19 situation is "especially serious" in Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata and a few other places in West Bengal, and violation of lockdown measures risk the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

As the situation worsened in a few states, things are looking optimistic as Manipur became India's second coronavirus-free state after Goa. Health Ministry said that the doubling rate of the disease slows to 7.5 days as against 3.4 days before the lockdown.

As many as 53 journalists working for different media organisations tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Mumbai on Monday. The 53 positive cases include TV journalist, video journalist and photographers of various news channels.

30 new coronavirus cases were reported from Mumbai's Dharavi area on Monday, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. With this, the total number of positive cases in the area has increased to 168 including 11 deaths.

As the BMC relaxed lockdown norms, some government offices and few private organisations opened on Monday, leading to huge queues of vehicles on the Eastern Express Highway, Kurla and Vashi toll naka.

Huge queue of vehicles were seen at the Vashi toll plaza in Navi Mumbai on Monday, as toll collection at national highways resumed.

With around 721 containment zones in Mumbai, BMC chief Praveen Pardeshi said that industries will not be allowed to function, but only private constructions can take place in non-containment zones.The civic body has allowed work on private construction projects in non-containment zones only if construction workers are available at the site and no workers should be brought from outside.

After 13 more cases were reported in Mira-Bhayandar on Sunday, the Mira Bhayandar corporation decided to impose complete lockdown. Only medical stores would remain open while shops selling essential items, such as vegetables, groceries and milk will shut down till Thursday night.

Work resumed on the Deonar flyover nearly a month after all work including construction was halted following the nation wide lockdown imposed since March 21 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in view of COVID-19 outbreak.

The BMC's health department confirmed a 25-year-old youth died of COVID-19. He had no known underlying health conditions.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as well as highway developers resumed collection at toll plazas in line with government directives. However, people were seen flouting social distancing norms.

Meanwhile, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray warned people of stricter restrictions, if lockdown was not taken seriously. In his Facebook live, he said, "After the partial relaxation given from Monday, there were reports of people coming out of their homes in big numbers. This would not be tolerated. If the restrictions are not followed, we will be compelled to impose more restrictions again."

While there was no one to feed the pigeons at Chowpatty, a large number of people gathered outside Saidham Temple to submit and fill form for food during a nationwide lockdown at Thakur Complex, Kandivali in Mumbai.

According to reports, BMC admitted that a large number of people have been issued passes to maintain supply and availability of essential items, besides essential services such as health, electricity and water.

Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar, too, was home quarantined as she had meet a few mediapersons who tested positive on Monday. Pednekar said, "As a precautionary measure, I have decided to be quarantined in my home, as in the past few days, I have come in contact with many mediapersons.'

Mumbai Police deployed their first mobile sanitisation van to protect policeman who are monitoring the street of Mumbai as they face Corona virus at LBS road in Ghatkopar.

An empty milk tempo was overturned on the Western Express highway in Dahisar amid lockdown. There were no casualties and the police reached the spot immidiately.
