Mira Road crimes: Man molests to prove potency, woman kills husband with lover's help

Mira Road is officially part of Thane district but it lies within the jurisdiction of Mira-Bhayandar city. Mira Road has witnessed crimes such as kidnapping, crimes against women and crimes against senior citizens. Here are the ten crimes that took place in Mira Road in 2019

In August 2019, a 35-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly killing her husband with the help of her lover. The incident occurred at 704, Silver Spring NR Ramdev Park building in Mira Road East. On July 15, the accused identified as Dipti Patankar allegedly killed her husband Pramod Patankar (43) with the help of her lover Udhav Pachankar. Dipti and Udhav were allegedly having an affair since 2015. When Pramod came to know about their relationship, Udhav told Dipti to get her husband out of the way.  Following this, she hatched a plan with Udhav to kill her husband. The duo slipped a sleeping pill into victim's tea and strangulated him with a lace. Both the accused have confessed to their crime and they have been booked and arrested under various sections of IPC

In June 2019, the Navghar police discovered two decomposed bodies from Meri Gold building, Beverly Park, in Mira Road. The bodies were identified as that of 75-year-old Meenakshi Iyer and her 42-year-old son Venkateshwar Iyer. The body of Meenakshi was found lying in the living room while her son Venkateshwar's body was recovered from the bedroom. A suicide note was found typed on a laptop which was kept on charge mode. The note said, "No one should be responsible for the deaths." The son had allegedly killed the mother by giving her poison and later consumed the same poison

Eight people were arrested and some cash and other valuables seized after police raided a gambling den in Mira Road. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a garage at Sheetal Nagar locality in Mira Road. The police caught eight people allegedly indulging in gambling and seized Rs 64,650 cash, four cars and a motorcycle from the premises. The accused were arrested and booked under relevant provisions of the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act

In May 2019, an alleged serial molester identified as Mahfuz Shaikh (21) was arrested from Mira Road. Shaikh who is allegedly impotent has molested more than 12 children and women to prove himself physically fit for sex because his wife left him a month after their marriage considering him impotent. During the interrogation, he confessed that he molested around 8 to 10 minor girls and women but the matter was reported to the police by only two women

Residents of a building in Naya Nagar, Mira Road, were shocked by an act of extreme cruelty by a resident. The person in question, Siddhesh Patel, 22, had become fed-up with a two-and-a-half-month-old kitten and flung it into a fire in May 2019. The kitten was taken to a veterinarian by animal lovers, and an FIR was registered against Patel

In April 2019, a 54-year-old thief, who was absconding for 33 years, was finally arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch. A team of unit 8 of the crime branch sleuths arrested the thief, identified as Salim Rukaya Khan, from his residence in Mira Road. Khan was first arrested in a robbery case in 1984, in which he had looted a man at knifepoint. After that, the accused went missing and was untraceable for over three decades

A gang of men, impersonating Mumbai Crime Branch officials, kidnapped an NRI businessman at knife-point in broad daylight at Mira Road on March 28, 2019. The 27-year-old businessman, Sonu Alok Khera, a native of Vashi, a dealer in readymade garments kept shuttling between Malaysia and Dubai for his business. He was held captive in a bungalow in Lokhandwala, Andheri West and Rs 2 crore was demanded from his mother for his release. The police arrested three men and a case was registered under section 385, 365, 170, 34 of IPC

In March 2019, a mobile shop was robbed by masked thieves in Mira Road. The thieves robbed mobile phones and laptops worth Rs 8 lakh after they entered the shop by cutting through the shutter with a gas cutter. A case was registered against the unknown burglars under section 380, 457, 454 and 34 of IPC

In January 2019, a video of an elderly woman being beaten up in an old age home went viral on social media. The video was allegedly recorded at the Aadhar Old Age home situated in Mira Road by a person residing in the neighbouring building. The caretaker of the old-age home was arrested by the police.

In January 2019, a 30-year-old car driver died on the spot near Fountain Hotel in Mira-Bhayander on Ghodbunder road after a speeding truck carrying debris suddenly fell on his car. The deceased car driver was identified as Sumit Patil who was on his way to Thane in his Ford car when a truck (MH 48 AJ 7254) which was also on its way to Thane lost control resulting in debris falling over the car instantly crushing the car driver. The driver was arrested by the police
