The Mumbai traffic police are initiating a new drive against bikers where they will not only be issued e-challans for traffic violations but also face action under Section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act 1988. The action, starting January 25, will bring additional penalty along with the e-challans.
The police are employing the logic that riding a bike and breaking rules in this manner is dangerous. Additional Commissioner of Police (traffic) Praveen Padwal told mid-day, "The way bikers violate traffic rules is dangerous to life. Action under the Motor Vehicles Act will ensure the rules are not violated."
During the drive, cops will be keeping an eye on bikers at traffic signals. An officer from the traffic police said, "There is an e-challan fine of '200 for jumping a signal. Under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, another '1,000 will be levied."
According to the traffic police, most of the violations include those by bikers. The offences include breaking signals, riding without a helmet, riding in the opposite direction, triple seat, talking on the mobile while riding, riding on the footpath and cutting lanes.

The areas that see most violations by bikers include Kandivli, Samta Nagar, Malad and Borivli in the western suburbs and Mulund, Bhandup, Chembur in the eastern suburbs.
In 2020, 86,270 e-challans were issued to bikers for jumping a signal and the penalties amounted to '1,72,54,000, for riding in the opposite direction, 22,706 e-challans were issued and penalties were worth '2,09,40,000 and for riding without a helmet, 7,23,533 e-challans were issued with fines were worth '36,17,66,500.
In 2019, 51,416 e-challans were issued for jumping the signal with fines worth '1,02,83,200 levies, 41,310 e-challans were issued for riding in the opposite direction with fines amounting to '1,54,92,200 and for riding without a helmet, 3,53,009 e-challans were issued with penalties worth '17,65,04,500.
