Western Railway collects Rs 80 crore as fines in 9 months

The Western Railway has recovered Rs 80.07 crore for irregular/ticketless travel, while Rs 26.92 lakh were collected as fines from those travelling without a mask, from April 2021 to January 2022.

"During the checks conducted from April 2021 to January 2022, around 13.67 lakh cases of ticketless/irregular travel including unbooked luggage cases were detected, resulting in a recovery of Rs 80.07 crore," Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway said.

He said during the period, nine cases of transfer of reserved tickets were detected and over R13,000 was recovered. Besides this, 540 beggars and 613 unauthorised hawkers were apprehended, out of which, 242 were charged, and an amount of Rs 1,04,165 was collected as railway dues. Around 369 people were prosecuted and Rs 1,34,870 were recovered in fines.

Thakur said that ticket checking staff have been vested with the power to collect fines from passengers without masks. As a result, 14,492 cases of travelling without masks were detected and approximately Rs 26.92 lakh was recovered from April 17, 2021, to January 31, 2022, by the Western Railway.
