After Home Minister RR Patil decided to refer the Amboli double murder case to the fast track court on Thursday, police are now in the process of roping in an able Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) to represent the state against the accused arrested. One of the most likely candidates is noted lawyer Ujjwal Nikam.

Confirming the development, Additional Commissio- ner of Police (western region) Vishwas Nangre Patil said, "We have spoken to Mr Nikam, and he sounded positive."
In course of his career, Nikam has worked as a SPP on various high profile cases, including the Bombay blasts case of 1993, the Gulshan Kumar murder case, the Pramod Mahajan murder trial, the Gateway of India blasts case of 2003, the Kherlanji massacre Dalit murder case and the Nadeem extradition case, which was fought in London.
The four accused in the case Jitendra Rana, Sunil Both, Satish Durgaj and Deepak Piswal were presented before the Andheri magistrate court on Friday, which remanded them to judicial custody till November 18.

Cops revealed that the custody period had been extended as all the witnesses were yet to identify the accused. V Bhoite, senior police inspector of DN Nagar police station said, "Some of the witnesses are yet to identify the accused, and establish the role played by each in the crime."
Bhoite further added that the identification parade is an important part of the investigation, saying, "We have recovered the weapons, but are yet to record statements of three more witnesses.
The are nine witnesses in the case, including the friends of Santos and Reuben who accompanied them that night, the coconut water vendor, the paan shop owner, and two waiters of the Amboli Bar and Kitchen, who let the girls in after the attack," said Bhoite.

"We also have to collect details of the existing attempt to murder charges pending against Durgas, in the Amboli police station," he added.
"Eyewitnesses have said that Durgas allegedly snatched the knives from the coconut vendor. However, the vendor needs to identify Satish. The complainant and the girls also need to identify the accused," added Bhoite.
