The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on Monday, excavated the first tunnel of the coastal road project that started on January 11, 2021.
The coastal road project involves the construction of 2.07 km twin tunnels at a depth of 10 metres to 70 metres underground with the help of India's largest 'Mawla' TBM plant. The tunnel will range from Priyadarshini Park to Girgaon Chowpatty on both ends.

Addressing the event, CM Thackeray said, "the Kinara Project is the dream of every Mumbaikar. It is not easy to connect two ends of the sea,especially, in the face of a pandemic but the team has been working hard to make the dream come true and I am proud of it." He added, "Not just the construction of the road, but beautiful sceneries will be developed around it."
He also said that the coalition government had made 55 flyovers across Mumbai but that is not enough now; before assuring that the project will be completed on time.
Kishori Pednekar added that work on the tunnel did not stop for a single day, even during the lockdown and with this pace she too thinks the project will be completed on time.
About 50 per cent of the work is done, the entire coastal road project is expected to be completed by December 2023, the BMC said in a statement.
The total cost of the project is approximately Rs 12,000 crore. Under this project, a 10.58-km Coastal Road is being constructed from Princes Street flyover to the southern end of Bandra-Worli Sea Bridge (Sea Link). It also includes 4+4 lanes, bridges, elevated roads and tunnels.
