The shed that has come up on the cleared land
Clearing of trees, construction work and environmentally destructive activities are taking place inside the eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, alleged a city-based green activist. He said that a huge area of more than 10 acres have been cleared at Royal Palms Complex to make way for a huge shed.
Stalin D, director of NGO Vanashakti, has written a letter to the municipal commissioner, chief conservator of forest (CCF)-SGNP, state environment secretary, Mumbai Suburban collector and Maharashtra Pollution Control Bureau (MPCB) regional officer in the matter.
"This is to highlight the illegal construction, clearing of vegetation and environmentally disruptive activities taking place in the ecologically sensitive zone of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The site in question is at Royal Palms in Goregaon East. Near Ruby Isle building, a huge area admeasuring more than 10 acres has been cleared of vegetation and a huge shed has been constructed," Stalin alleged in his letter.

He also claimed that hundreds of vehicles are seen at the site now and film shootings take place till late into the night. "These activities cannot be undertaken without the permissions of the ecologically sensitive zone monitoring committee. Please note that leopard movement in Royal Palms is maximum at night and the use of lights, sound systems, and increased traffic can all drive the big cats into other human settlements nearby and increase conflict. The use of high intensity lights and sound disrupt the nocturnal wildlife that is in the zone due to its contiguous boundary with the Sanjay Gandhi National Park," added Stalin.
The green activist has requested the authorities to investigate the matter and also to stop the use of the site for film shootings as it brings more traffic and disturbance inside the ESZ.
