A 27-year-old man on board the Howrah-Mumbai Express was injured when an unidentified person allegedly hit him with a wooden stick from outside the moving train in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Thursday, reported news agency PTI.
The incident took place between Ambivli and Kalyan in the district at around noon on Monday when the Thane train passenger, a labourer hailing from Manmad in Nashik, was standing on the footboard of a general coach of the train, an official from the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Kalyan said, reported PTI.
An unidentified person present near the tracks hit him with a wooden stick without any provocation.
The Thane train passenger suffered severe eye injuries. He was promptly rushed to a hospital for treatment, the official said, reported PTI.

Based on his complaint, the Kalyan GRP on Tuesday registered a case under Indian Penal Code sections 336 (rash or negligent act as to endanger human life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), he said, reported PTI.
Efforts were on to nab the culprit, the police said.
Meanwhile, a 25-year-old woman went into labour while travelling on a local train in Navi Mumbai township of Maharashtra following which the railway police rushed her to a nearby hospital where she delivered a baby girl, an official said on Wednesday, reported PTI.
Zakia Mehboob Syed, a resident of Uran area, was on board the Uran-Nerul local train when she went into labour at around 8.30 am on Tuesday as the train reached Nerul station, senior police inspector Sambhaji Katare of the Government Railway Police said, reported PTI.
Three women police constables then assisted in transporting her to the Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul by an ambulance, the official said in a release.
The woman delivered a baby girl at the hospital and both were reported to be in good health, he said, reported PTI.
The woman's husband expressed gratitude towards the railway police for their prompt assistance.
Meanwhile, A 52-year-old man was attacked and injured by four members of his family over a dispute in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Tuesday, reported PTI.
The incident occurred in the limits of Shivajinagar police station on Sunday, an official said.
