The Thane Municipal Corporation has started issuing notices to bulk solid waste generators, who generate more than 100 kg of waste daily, asking them to treat their own waste. The process to issue notices started on Thursday after the same was decided during the Swachh Bharat Mission review meeting on December 21 (Wednesday).

A TMC official said, "There are around 150 commercial bulk waste generators here and we have already sent notices to 70 such establishments including wedding halls, hotels and commercial complexes." These establishments are given 25 days to comply, failing which action will be taken.

"According to the guidelines on solid waste management, bulk generators should treat wet waste on their own while the dry waste should be recycled," the official said. As per guidelines, TMC can stop collecting waste from bulk generators and can collect Rs 500 fine daily till the establishment starts treating its own waste.

TMC Commissioner Abhijeet Bhangar, during the Swachh Bharat Mission review meeting on Wednesday, said, "The establishments that generate more than 100 kilograms of waste per day such as wedding halls, educational institutes, hotels, and hostels are termed bulk waste generators and are expected to dispose of the waste in their premises. They should be instructed to do the same."

Thane city generates more than 1,000 tonnes of waste daily. The TMC implemented the guidelines on solid waste management in 2018. However, its implementation stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic. The civic body has again taken up the issue now.
