Police have arrested a 21-year-old man after seizing mephedrone, a banned drug, worth Rs 10.40 lakh from his possession in Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.

During routine patrolling, a police team spotted the man moving in a suspicious manner on Goandevi Mandir road in Bhayander area on Saturday, senior police inspector Rahul Rakh of the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police's central crime unit said.

The police stopped him and during a search seized 52 gm of mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 10.40 lakh from his possession, the official said in a release.

The accused, identified as Ankit Bharat Jadhav, was arrested and booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
The police were trying to find out from where he got the contraband and to whom he intended to sell it, the official said.

In a separate case, earlier in May 2023, police seized drugs worth Rs 8.40 lakh in Maharashtra's Thane city and arrested a man and a woman in this connection. Acting on a tip-off, officials of the Mira Bhayander-Vasai Virar police on Saturday raided a room at a chawl (row tenement) in Retibunder area on Ghodbunder Road.

The police seized 105 grams of mephedrone (MD) powder, a synthetic stimulant, from the two persons and arrested them, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 1, Jayant Bajbale told PTI. The accused have been identified as Marjahan @ Gudiya Tajuddiran Shaikh and Ali Asgar Hussain Badela, he said. They have been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official said. The police were trying to find out from where the duo got the contraband and to whom they planned to sell it.

In another case, in July 2023, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Thane city police in Maharashtra seized banned drugs worth nearly Rs 55 lakh and registered 13 cases under the NDPS Act so far this year, an official said. According to senior inspector Sanjay Shinde of the ANC, 35 people have been arrested between January 1 and July 13 across the Thane city police commissionerate comprising five divisions, PTI reported.
