In a significant development, the Thane city police have apprehended another suspect in connection with the murder of a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader that occurred three years ago. The arrest comes as a breakthrough in the case that sent shockwaves through the region, stated a report in PTI.
According to the report, the police have taken into custody Habib Ajmain Sheikh (36), who had been a fugitive since the fatal shooting of MNS leader Jameel Sheikh, who held the position of president for the party's Rabodi ward. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shivraj Patil confirmed the arrest, marking a significant step towards resolving the long-standing case.
Previously, the authorities had already arrested two individuals, Shaid Sheikh and Irfan Sonu, in connection with the shooting incident that claimed the life of Jameel Sheikh. The attack occurred on November 23, 2020, when the MNS leader was riding his two-wheeler in Rabodi. The assailants, in a chilling display of violence, followed him closely and opened fire in broad daylight, resulting in his tragic death, the report stated. The assailants followed him with a vehicle with a fake license plate.
At the time of the incident, an offence under Section 302 (murder) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered by law enforcement. The case remained under investigation for an extended period.
The breakthrough came when the crime branch obtained substantial evidence that pointed towards the involvement of Habib Ajmain Sheikh. Acting on this evidence, the police promptly arrested him, shedding new light on the circumstances surrounding the murder, the report further stated.
While this arrest is a significant step forward in bringing justice to the victim and his family, it is worth noting that one more accused remains at large. Law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to locate and apprehend this individual to ensure that all parties responsible for the heinous crime face legal consequences.
The resolution of this case serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the Thane city police in their pursuit of justice, even in cases that may have remained unresolved for an extended period.
