A 25-year-old truck driver was allegedly beaten to death by some people in the wee hours of Monday near Durgadi fort in Kalyan township in Thane district of Maharashtra, police told news agency PTI.
The trigger behind the violent attack is not known immediately, an official told PTI, adding that the incident occurred at around 4:40 AM.
The deceased has been identified as Bolakumar Deepak Mahato, a native of Jharkhand who was living in Navi Mumbai, the official told PTI.
The exact number of people involved in the attack is being ascertained and the process to register an offence is underway, reported PTI.

In another case, a 35-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly strangling his 10-year-old mentally-challenged daughter to death in their house in Thane district of Maharashtra a day before, police told PTI on Monday.
The couple has four daughters, aged between 5 to 14, and the youngest of them lives with her grandparents in their native village, the police official Told PTI.
The accused Manoj Agrahari allegedly strangled his daughter, Lovely, at their home in Dombivli when other members had gone out, an official told PTI quoting the FIR.
Agrahari is an alcoholic and used to beat his wife, he said.
The accused works at a grocery shop while his wife is employed at a company in the MIDC area of Dombivli.
The victim, Lovely, has been mentally challenged and also speech and hearing impaired since her birth.
According to the complaint, Agrahari went to the scrap shop where his 14-year-old daughter was working on Sunday and told her that Lovely was dead.
When the girl rushed home she saw her sister lying dead on bed and alerted her mother, the official told PTI.
Police have registered a case of murder under the Indian Penal Code and conducting further investigation.
Meanwhile, a 54-year-old man died after he was slapped by a State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawan during an argument over the latter's car headlight in Nagpur city, an official told PTI on Sunday.
The incident took place at Mata Mandir area under Wathoda police station on Thursday night when accused Nikhil Gupta (30) arrived there to visit his sister. When Gupta was parking his car, the vehicle's headlight beam struck the face of victim Muralidhar Ramraoji Neware, a resident of the same locality, the official told PTI.
