A 22-year-old man drowned after venturing for a swim in a water-filled quarry in Maharashtra's Thane district, a civic official told news agency PTI on Monday.
Himanshu Mhatre, a resident of Indira Nagar in Turbhe area, went for swimming in the quarry on Sunday evening, but could not gauge its depth and drowned, Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell chief Yasin Tadvi told PTI.
Local police carried out a search, but had to discontinue the operation at night due to darkness, he said.
A team of the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) went to the quarry at around 7 am on Monday and fished out the body, the official told PTI.

The body was sent to a government hospital for post-mortem. The Rabale police have as of now registered a case of accidental death, the official said.
In another incident, a boat carrying three fishermen capsized in the Arabian sea off the Versova coast in Mumbai, leaving one of them dead and another missing, while the third person swam to safety, an official told PTI on Sunday.
The trio set out in the boat for fishing from Devachiwadi in Versova area between 8 pm and 9 pm on Saturday, he said.
The boat overturned, about two-three km from the seashore, the official said quoting local people and police.
One of the three persons, identified as Vijay Bamania (35), swam to safety, the official told PTI.
The official said as per local people, the other two persons were identified as Usmani Bhandari (22) and Vinod Goel (45).
"The body of Vinod Goel was found on Sunday afternoon during the search operation while Usmani Bhandari is missing," the Fire Brigade official told PTI.
He said the search operation was suspended post-afternoon due to high tides.
Various agencies including Fire Brigade, police, the Navy, lifeguards and a helicopter were involved in the search operation.
Meanwhile, a 17-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled quarry at Virar in Maharashtra's Palghar district while trying to get a ball out of it when he was playing cricket nearby, a fire brigade official told PTI on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, he said.
"The boy, identified as Yash Solkar, tried to get the ball that fell into the water-filled quarry out of it when he was playing a game of cricket on Thursday evening. However, he drowned in the water body," the official told PTI.
The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after being alerted, but could not trace him, he said.
Later, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was called in. Its personnel managed to recover the victim's body, he added.
The body was later sent for post-mortem to a government hospital and an accidental death report was filed, another official told PTI.
