Thane: 1st Covid-19 death at Bhiwandi old age home

Thirty-eight others test positive for Covid-19 at institution; authorities are screening nearby village

A 72-year-old resident from Bhiwandi's Matoshri Old Age Home in Sorgaon died on Saturday morning at Thane Civil Hospital, while three others are in the ICU. Currently, 85 persons, including residential workers and their family members, have been admitted at the Thane Civil Hospital, out of which 38 have tested positive, while others have been kept in isolation. Thane health officials are not leaving any stone unturned and have screened Sorgaon village, where the home is located.

Matoshri Old Age home in Sorgaon, Bhiwandi, witnessed a Covid-19 breakout on November 23. On Saturday morning, a resident succumbed to infection. He had co-morbidities.

Ashok Kedare-Patil, head of medical affairs of the home, said, "Most of the inmates are above 70 years old, and some have co-morbidities as well. Therefore, they have been shifted to keep them under close observation. Their health is steady." After cases emerged in the home, Thane health officials started screening people in Sorgaon village. Five persons tested positive.
