Take care of women’s safety: Citizens to Maharashtra govt

In light of the recent Sakinaka rape case, as well as the gang rape of a teenager in Dombivli, several human rights and civil rights groups gathered at Behrampada's Gate Number 18 on Saturday to stage a protest against the state, and hold it accountable for the violence being perpetrated against women.

The protest "Save Women's Lives, Save Women's Rights" was organised by the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), Chiranjeevi, Bharat Bachao Andolan, Vidyarthi Bharti, Waghini, Marathi Bharati and Ganai Sanskrutik Chalwal.

Speaking with mid-day, activist Feroz Mithiborwala, said: "The two recent rape cases that we have had in Mumbai within almost a fortnight send some very worrying signals for the city. The Mumbai police has taken immediate action in both the cases unlike some other states such as UP and Delhi. But we still need to hold the state - as well as society - responsible for these crimes."

Noorjehan Safia, co-founder of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA), said, "It is important that state structures recognise the fact that women's rights are human rights. We strongly condemn the fact that the police is not doing its job with integrity. We also want the Rajasthan government to withdraw the amendments to the child marriage law."
