On Friday, a slab of a five-storey building collapsed in south Mumbai's Fort area. There were no casualties, but 35 people were rescued by the fire brigade. The building was over 60 years old and MHADA had given permission to carry out repair work. According to sources, it was not in seriously dilapidated condition.

The building was a residential structure. According to fire brigade officials, initially 20 people were vacated, but later 15 more were taken out through a window as the staircase was blocked owing to the slab collapse. The rescue and evacuation operations were completed by noon.

A MHADA official said, "We had given permission for repair work but will check if the work was done as per the permission."
