A disgruntled relative of a patient thrashed a first year resident doctor at the Sion Hospital around 5 pm yesterday

The doctor who was identified as Swapnil Shinde. Sion Hospital Dean Dr Avinash Supe said Shinde was from the medicine department and following the incident nobody knows about his whereabouts and repeated attempts to contact him over the cellphone remained futile.

Ramesh Dumre, who was suffering from a liver disease, was brought to the hospital on Wednesday. As his condition worsened, Shinde decided to shift him to the ICU and initiated the process. At the same time, a male relative of Dumare lost his cool and assaulted Shinde claiming that he was not paying enough attention to the patient. Another resident doctor claimed that Shinde, who was traumitised after the incident, immediately packed his bags and left the hospital premises.

That was the last time anybody saw Shinde. Dr Santosh Wakchoure, president of the central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), said MARD members would be observing a black day today to protest against the rising number of assaults against doctors by the relatives of patients. The doctors are now trying to get an FIR lodged against Dumre's relative, who tried to flee the hospital after the incident. He was caught by the security staff and was handed over to the Sion police.
