Republic Day: Weapons seized, 'wanted' arrested as Mumbai Police conduct ‘all out operation’ to enhance security

Mumbai Police have conducted "all out operation" to enhance the security in the city in view of the Republic day celebrations.

The "operation" that began on January 24 was conducted to thwart any untoward incidents during the republic day celebrations. The operation was conducted in the entire city and included a special traffic drive, combing operations, checking of hotels and lodges, arresting wanted persons and a drive against illegal hawkers.

During the drive, the police have seized 41 illegal weapons including swords, knives and other sharp objects, while many people have been arrested.

It was conducted under the supervision of Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, Special Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti and Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chaudhary.

Police said that during the operation, it nabbed at least 51 persons who were accused or absconding in various cases. "As many as 100 accused having a non-bailable warrant issued against them were arrested in the operation. Action was also taken on 42 people who had been externed by the police," the police said.

All senior officers of the city police were present on the ground for the drive, which was conducted between 11 pm and 2 am on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The police said, in the operation, action was taken against 139 people under the NDPS Act. The action was taken on people selling and consuming drugs.

"70 places including gambling dens and illegal liquor joints were raided and as many as 55 people were nabbed," police said, "combing operations were conducted at 202 spots in the city."

The police also conducted extensive Nakabandis at 111 spots in Mumbai. During this, 6406 vehicles including four and two-wheelers were examined.
"The police took action against 2568 vehicles under the motor vehicle act and five drivers were booked for drinking while driving," the police said.

Besides, the police also conducted checks at 844 hotels, lodges and musafirkhanas in Mumbai while 331 illegal hawkers were fined during the drive.
