Relief from heavy rain for Mumbai from July 15

After witnessing heavy showers over the past few days, rainfall intensity in the city is expected to reduce from Thursday onwards, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday.

The department had issued an orange alert for Mumbai, which remains active till Wednesday, when the city will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. "An offshore trough and formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal are causing rainfall in the Konkan region," an IMD official told mid-day.

The IMD official said the current synoptic situation was favourable for extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over the Konkan region, which we are experiencing as of now. "However, such weather systems do not persist very long. They have active and lull phases. We are currently experiencing good rainfall along the coast because it is in an active phase."

Maharashtra witnessed intermittent rainfall last week, with Mumbai and its neighbouring areas receiving very little shower. However, this will not be the case from Thursday onwards, said the IMD. "There will be rainfall, but the intensity will reduce in comparison to the past few days," said the official.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a red alert for the next few days for Pune, Satara, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Kolhapur.
