Rain likely to abate in Mumbai, Thane over next 48 hours

Days after monsoon hit the city bringing in spells of heavy showers, Mumbai and Thane will see rain abating in the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department has said. Other areas in the state will also experience a relatively drier patch, it said. Spells are likely to become "intermittent" along the coast, up until at least June 24.

"As per our extended rain forecast, there is a reduction in rainfall over the interiors of the state till July 24," said an IMD official. "The Konkan region is also likely to receive less rainfall comparatively to last week. It will be less than what it was during the week of June 11-17 when the region got good rainfall."

The official said, "Mumbai and Thane are also likely to have reduced rainfall starting Monday, for at least 48 hours. Eventually, though, the rainfall will be light to moderate spells, except for in the interiors, which is likely to receive less rain than before."

Asked why there would be reduced rainfall over Mumbai, Thane, and coastal Maharashtra, the official explained: "The interiors of the state generally get rainfall due to weather systems like low-pressure areas. However, there are no such weather systems currently present, which is why there is a likelihood of less rainfall there."
