Pune car crash: Maharashtra govt suspends arrested doctors of Sassoon General Hospital

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday suspended the two doctors of a city hospital arrested in connection with the Pune car crash. Dr Ajay Taware and Dr Shrihari Halnor of the Sassoon General Hospital were arrested for allegedly swapping the blood sample of the minor accused of the Pune car crash, reported PTI.

The Sassoon General in Pune had requested the suspension of senior doctor Ajay Taware and the dismissal of another doctor following their arrest for alleged manipulation of blood samples of the Pune car crash's minor accused.

According to the PTI report, police arrested Dr Taware, who heads the state-run hospital's forensic medicine department and chief medical officer Dr Shrihari Halnor, and staff member Atul Ghatkamble for allegedly swapping the Pune car crash 17-year-old accused's blood samples with those of another individual who had no traces of alcohol.

Dr Vinayak Kale, the hospital's Dean, told reporters that the administration proposed to the state government that Taware be suspended immediately upon his arrest in the Pune car crash case, while Dr Halnor's temporary employment was terminated on May 28. "Action of suspension is taken at the state government's level. A proposal has been sent," he said.

According to a letter delivered to his office by Pune police, the accused doctors allegedly plotted to switch blood samples for financial benefit, Dr Kale stated.

"After this step (arrest), we removed Dr Taware's charge as HOD, Forensic Medicine and transferred it to a senior professor in the department. Dr. Holnar's service was transitory, and it ended on May 28," the Dean stated.

Ghatkamble, who was also arrested in connection with the Pune car crash, a conservancy employee, has been suspended, he confirmed.

Two IT professionals in their twenties were killed when their motorbike was hit by a speeding Porsche, allegedly driven by a 17-year-old, in Pune's Kalyani Nagar region early on May 19. According to authorities, the youngster, son of builder Vishal Agarwal, was intoxicated at the time.
