A 26-year-old man allegedly kidnapped a 19-year-old woman and demanded an iPhone or Rs 1.5 lakh to release her. The man has been arrested. The Navghar police said that the man kidnapped the teenager on Wednesday from the Golden Next area and called her mother from her mobile phone demanding an iPhone or Rs 1.5 lakh in cash as ransom.
Police sources said the mother immediately approached the police. When the police called the kidnapper on his phone, he picked it up and repeated his demand to the officer without realising who was on the other side. When the officer responded to his demand, the man got scared and fled, leaving the 19-year-old alone.
During investigation, it was revealed that the accused and the victim had met in January and the two had an affair. However, when the woman found out that the man was already married, she stopped meeting him. Angered, the accused forced the woman to meet him, threatening to make some private videos viral. Scared, she met him a couple of times.
On Wednesday, the accused again asked her to meet him citing the same threat, said an officer. "We have registered a case under several sections of the IPC against the man and have begun investigation. He has been arrested," said DCP Jayant Bajbale of Zone I of MBVV police.
