A 24-year-old man was arrested in Palghar district allegedly with banned tobacco products worth Rs 12.17 lakh, a police official told news agency PTI on Thursday.
Idris Kachlia, a resident of Wada, was held by the Crime Branch on September 4 on a tip off that banned tobacco products were stocked in his godown, the official told PTI.
He has been charged under Indian Penal Code provisions and Food and Drug Administration regulations, Palghar Superintendent of Police Balasaheb Patil told PTI.
Wada police is probing the case further, he added.
Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai police in Maharashtra's Thane district on Thursday arrested a 37-year-old man after recovering MD worth Rs 15 lakh from him, an official told PTI.
Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) carried out a raid at village Pisarve and seized 150 grams of the banned drug in powdered form from one Gulam Ali Nadir Khanbaj, the station house officer at Taloja police station told PTI.
Apart from the drug worth nearly Rs 15 lakh, the police also seized a high-end car valued at about Rs 50 lakh and Rs 50,000 cash from Khanbaj.
A case has been registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the official told PTI.
In another incident, the police on Wednesday arrested two drug traffickers at Mahim east in central Mumbai and seized mephedrone worth Rs 28 lakh from them, an official told PTI.
The Ghatkopar unit of the crime branch's anti-narcotics cell (ANC) nabbed the two persons in Kamlanagar area in the morning and recovered 140 grams of the banned substance, also popular among drug users as 'm-cat' or 'meow meow'.
The seized drug is worth about Rs 28 lakh, the official told PTI.
The duo told the police that they had been trafficking drugs in the city's Sion, Dharavi and Mahim for the past several months, the official told PTI.
Police have arrested a 49-year-old man and seized mephedrone, a banned drug, worth Rs 50 lakh from his possession in Navi Mumbai township, an official said on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off, the Navi Mumbai police's Anti-Narcotics Cell laid a trap near the man's house in Taloja area on Tuesday evening and caught him.
