The CISF at Mumbai airport were faced with a bizarre security breach as a 23-year-old naked man had to be apprehended as he tried to scale the airport's perimeter wall on Tuesday

At a time when Mumbai airport has been put on alert more than 10 times this month alone, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were faced with a bizarre security breach -- a 23-year-old naked man had to be apprehended as he tried to scale the airport's perimeter wall.

Vinod Kumar was apprehended by the CISF at Mumbai airport

The incident took place at around 6.35 pm on Tuesday, while CISF personnel were patrolling near the western side of gate number 8. They spotted a person trying to climb over the wall from the Gaondevi hutment area. The Quick Response Team (QRT) immediately challenged him, at which point he slipped back towards the hutment area.

Still suspicious, the team laid an ambush in the area, and sure enough, they spotted the man on the wall again. Despite repeated warnings from the security personnel, he jumped into the airport perimeter. The CISF gave chase and soon overpowered him, and, to their surprise, discovered that he was in the buff. The man, identified as Vinod Kumar, had scratches all over his body from the wire fencing.

He was later handed over to the Sahar police, who asked him why he had broken into the airport premises. However, when Kumar said that he didn't know how he had even got inside the perimeter, the police decided to have him checked at the Thane Mental Hospital. Doctors said Kumar was "mentally deranged".

"According to reports from Thane Mental hospital, he is mentally deranged. We presented Kumar in court, and as per the court's decision we have now shifted him to Thane Mental Hospital," said Senior Police Inspector of Airport police station, Rajendra Nagbhire. He added that Kumar had come to Mumbai in search of work, and was staying with his maternal uncle in Jogeshwari.

This was the first such attempt this year, but there have been similar cases in the past, said an airport official. "At such times, when the city airport is such a sensitive area, security cannot be taken for granted. Hence, the local police was involved. What surprises us is why people try to get into the airport operation area at all," said the official.
