A recent survey done by a private hospital in Mumbai revealed that 26 percent of Mumbaikars who were advised to go for surgery-related orthopedics refused to go to the hospital due to fear of Covid-19.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, doctors witnessed a surge in the number of orthopedic cases being reported across the city. This alarming trend prompted teams at Fortis Hospital, Mulund and Kalyan, Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, and SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim, to reach out to Mumbaikars to understand people's awareness levels about their bone and joint health and its long-term impact that would shape their post-pandemic functionality.

The hospital conducted an online survey in which 5005 respondents participated out of which 1,287 (26 percent) people were advised to undergo surgery by doctors, but due to fear of Covid-19 they didn't go to the hospital. While 1,002 said that their doctor put them on medication to bridge the gap till surgery.

On the other hand, 624 respondents said that their doctors were fine with delaying the procedures as they were not time-sensitive.

According to the survey, 58 per cent of respondents delayed their surgery. Around 2,100 (42 per cent) people went for surgery.

Survey highlights:

- 41 per cent of Mumbaikars worked from home for 10 hours every day during the lockdown period.
- 73 percent of Mumbaikars did not have the proper setup at home to work efficiently.
- 15 per cent didn't get time to plan and cook their meals, so they mostly snacked and 6 per cent ate ready-to-cook meals.
- Around 18 per cent consulted a nutritionist/dietician to plan their meals.
- 26 percent of respondents did not get any time to exercise at all and 24 percent of Mumbaikars attempted to make time to exercise, but could not sustain the efforts.
- 6 percent of respondents found it tedious to exercise after finishing work and other chores.

"The fact that percent Mumbaikars didn't get time to plan and cook their meals, so they mostly snacked & 6 percent ate ready-to-cook meals should be considered an alarm bell - lockdown or not, paying attention to eating and exercise habits is paramount," said Dr Lalit Panchal, Consultant Orthopedic, SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim-A Fortis Associate.
