City finally experiences winter-like conditions, as temperature drops to 16 degrees Celsius

After experiencing hot and humid conditions for nearly two weeks, Mumbaikars finally woke up to a nip in the air. With the minimum temperature plummeting to 16 degrees Celsius, Mumbai recorded the season's coldest day on Saturday.

On Friday, the Santa Cruz Observatory of the IMD recorded a minimum temperature of 19.6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature dropped by 3.6 degrees Celsius in a day. Similarly, IMD's Colaba observatory recorded 21.2 degrees Celsius on Friday, which dropped to 18.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

The development has comes as a relief. On December 17, IMD's Santa Cruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest place of the day not just in India, but even in the sub-continent.

Sushma Nair, scientist of IMD's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Colaba said, "The drop in the minimum temperature is almost two degrees below normal. The minimum temperature is likely to drop further in the next couple of days. Mumbaikars can expect a chilly weekend as the temperature is likely to drop below 16 degrees."

Rajesh Kapadia of Vagaries of Weather, a popular private weather blog said, "Cool winds are likely along Mumbai and Konkan region. Mumbai can witness a further drop by 1-2 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday morning, with the minimum temperature settling around 15 degrees Celsius."
