Mumbai: WR mulling extension of platforms between Andheri, Churchgate

Western Railway (WR) is gearing up to conduct a survey between Andheri and Churchgate railway stations to explore the possibility of extending platforms to accommodate 15-coach trains which already run between Andheri and Virar. This move comes in response to the increasing demand for longer trains and the existing congestion in the 12-coach locals that currently operate on this route.

Niraj Verma, DRM, WR, said, "The extension project aims to reduce the burden on the existing 12-coach locals and maximise the utilisation of 15-coach trains that already run between Andheri and Virar. If approved by the Railway Board, the project is estimated to cost approximately R400 crore. This initiative seeks to enhance passenger comfort and accommodate the increasing demand for public transportation along this route. Additionally, the extension is expected to improve the overall efficiency of train operations and contribute to a more sustainable urban transportation system."

Addressing city's growing needs

He added that the initiative is part of WR's ongoing efforts to improve commuter experience and address the growing transportation needs of Mumbai's residents. "Extending platforms will not only enhance passenger comfort but also contribute to the efficient operation of the railway network. By accommodating longer trains, the project aims to reduce overcrowding and provide a more comfortable journey for commuters. This extension will also facilitate quicker boarding and alighting, leading to improved train schedules and overall operational efficiency. Additionally, the initiative aligns with the broader goal of promoting sustainable and reliable public transportation in Mumbai, ultimately benefiting the city's residents and visitors alike," Verma added.

About the survey

A WR source said, "The survey will involve detailed assessments of the feasibility and impact of platform extensions, including the required infrastructure upgrades and potential benefits. WR is committed to ensuring minimal disruption to regular services during the survey and subsequent construction if the project receives the green light. This commitment entails careful planning and coordination to minimise any inconvenience to commuters while ensuring the project's successful implementation. The survey will also involve consultations with stakeholders, including local authorities, to gather input and address any concerns."

A transport expert, requesting anonymity, said, "If the project is approved, this is going to reduce a lot of stress on Mumbai locals. No doubt, passengers will face minor issues during the extension of platforms but in the long run, this project is a boon for Mumbai. The only hope is that the Railway Board approves this project."
