Mumbai Weather Update: Generally cloudy sky with possibility of light to moderate rainfall likely today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest Mumbai weather update, has predicted a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall in Mumbai on Friday.

After a two-day lull, it rained in most parts of Mumbai on Friday morning, bringing relief to citizens from the hot and humid weather.

The showers started with thunder, but there were no reports of major waterlogging anywhere in the city. The official said that the public transport services of railways and BEST bus undertaking were largely normal, barring some delays. Here's the latest Mumbai weather update.

The weather department has predicted a "generally cloudy sky with possibility of light to moderate rain in the city and suburbs" in the next 24 hours.

The maximum temperature in the city is likely to settle at 34 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be recorded at 26 degrees Celsius.

A high tide of about 3.62 metres is expected to hit Mumbai at 5.46 pm today, stated Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body also said that a low tide of about 2.14 metres is expected at 10.58 am today.

The IMD announced the onset of southwest monsoon over Mumbai. Earlier on Sunday, Mumbai saw rainfall, indicating the start of the anticipated weather activity. The IMD had reported that the southwest monsoon has advanced to parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Maharashtra, Telangana, south Chhattisgarh, south Odisha, and more areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh.

This year's Monsoon onset was two days earlier as the usual date of the onset is on June 1. This year, Kerala experienced widespread pre-monsoon rains.

After the onset of monsoon over Mumbai on June 9, ahead of the normal date of its arrival on June 11, the rains had stayed away from the metropolis for the last two days, turning the weather in the metropolis sultry.

Meanwhile, the national capital, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar were in the grip of a severe heatwave on Thursday with maximum temperatures crossing the 46 degrees Celsius mark at several places and no immediate respite in sight due to the slow progress of the southwest monsoon.

Buxar in Bihar recorded 47.2 degrees Celsius, the highest in the country on Thursday, which was 8.9 degrees above the normal maximum temperature for the season.

The IMD, in its extended range forecast for the next two weeks, said the cumulative monsoon rains received across the country for the first 12 days of this season was 4 per cent less than the normal, with northwest India remaining parched with 53 per cent deficient rains.

Southern India, on the other hand, received 60 per cent more rainfall than normal during the June 1-12 period.

The weather office said conditions were likely to become favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon towards the end of the week around June 19.
