Mumbai train firing: RPF constable sent to judicial custody; court denies permission for narco analysis, other tests

The Borivali Metropolitan Magistrate court has remanded Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetan Singh into 14-day judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the deaths of four passengers, including his senior officer, on a moving train. Meanwhile, the court has denied permission to the probe agency to carry out brain mapping, polygraph, and narco-analysis tests on the 33-year-old Singh.

During the proceedings, Singh was presented before the magistrate court in suburban Borivali, following the conclusion of his previous remand. Since the Government Railway Police (GRP), the investigative body did not seek further remand, the court ruled to place him in judicial custody.

The GRP had initially sought permission for various tests, including brain mapping, polygraph, and narco analysis, arguing that the gravity of the case warranted a comprehensive investigation. However, the court denied the request, leading to the exclusion of these tests from the ongoing legal process.

The tragic incident occurred on July 31 on the moving Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express near Palghar railway station in Maharashtra. According to officials, Singh, aged 34, allegedly shot and killed his superior officer, RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Tikaram Meena, as well as three passengers on board the train. His arrest ensued when passengers managed to pull the train's emergency chain, bringing it to a halt near Mira Road station on the Mumbai suburban network. Singh was apprehended while attempting to escape, with his weapon in his possession.
