In her suicide note, 17-yr-old wrote that she had been raped a day before her sister’s wedding in 2012 by her would-be brother-in-law; earlier her boyfriend allegedly raped her and then left her
A teenage girl committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan on Tuesday and, in a suicide note, blamed two men who had allegedly raped her. The Vakola police later arrested the duo for rape and abetting her suicide.
According to the police, the 17-year-old used to stay with her parents in Vakola, Santacruz (East) and was a student of First-Year B.Com at a Vile Parle-based college. She hanged herself by a dupatta which she had slung across the ceiling fan.
Her mother, who returned home at 9.30 pm, found the door locked from inside. She then called up her father, who broke down the door to find their daughter hanging by the fan. Police were called and, at 10 pm, when the officers arrived, they found a letter the girl had written in Hindi.
'Raped twice'
In her note, the girl revealed that she had been raped twice. The first incident was in 2012, when she had gone to attend her sister's wedding at her native place in Uttar Pradesh.
"The girl wrote that a day before her sister was about to get married, her would-be brother-in-law had raped her," said Vilas Joshi, senior police inspector of Vakola police station. The girl mentioned that she was then 14-years-old and could not tell her parents about the rape, as she was afraid that her sister's marriage would be called off.
The girl then came to Mumbai and began living with her parents. Her sister and her husband also stayed in Wadala. Police said the girl had a boyfriend in college. The 17-year-old allegedly raped the girl a few months ago by promising to marry her, and then broke off all contact with her.
"The girl, in her note, said she was depressed and feared facing her parents' wrath when she told them she had been raped by her boyfriend," said Joshi. The Vakola police, on the basis of the letter, traced and arrested the brother-in-law and the teenage boy for allegedly raping her and abetting her suicide.
"They were booked under Sections 376 (rape) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. They will be produced in court on Thursday (today)," Joshi told mid-day. The girl's parents were in a state of shock and said they had no inkling of what their daughter had been going through.
