Mumbai: Taximen's union calls for indefinite strike from September 26

The Mumbai taximen union on Wednesday announced that they will observe an indefinite strike from September 26. Earlier, the union had called off the strike following a meeting with the state industries miniter Uday Samant.

Confirming the development, A L Quadros, general secretary of Mumbai Taximen's union, told mid-day.com, "We will be going on a strike."

A statement released by the union said, "The Mumbai Taximen's union, Mumbai Taxi Association and Autorickshaw unions have decided to go on indefinite strike from 26th September, 2022 in protest against failure to the commitment made by Uday Samant, Hon'ble Industrial Minister, Maharashtra State to revise the taxi and autorickshaw fare."

The statement further said, "It may be recalled that the Hon'ble Industrial Minister had called a meeting of all the taxi and auto unions on 13.9.2022 in Mantralaya and made an appeal to the unions to call off the strike since Govt. is considering the demands of fare revision within 10 days. The union agreed to call off the strike on the basis of the assurance given by the minister. However the minister has failed to honour his commitment and hence the Taxi and Rickshaw operators have decided to go on strike."

Around 48,000 taxi drivers and about two lakh autorickshaw drivers in Mumbai had decided to go on a strike from September 15, seeking a hike in fares, the auto and taxi drivers' union had said.
