The police, BMC, Western Railway and Central Railway have collected Rs 45 lakh as fine from 22,976 no-mask violators in the city, on Monday, reports Times of India.
Despite repeated appeals and a rise in COVID-19 cases, Mumbaikars do not seem to adhere to safety norms, including wearing masks.
BMC alone had collected a whopping amount of Rs 60 lakh as fine, over the weekend. The officials said they are also making violators do community service like sweeping the road if they can't pay the fine.
With a sharp rise in cases in the city, BMC has imposed stricter rules including a fine of Rs 200 on those caught not wearing a mask. Monday onwards, police are also issuing challans to the maskless.
Mumbai Metro One will also start imposing the Rs 200 fine on violators. "Any commuter found flouting mask norms is first counselled. If the commuter still refuses to fall in line and doesn't wear a mask, then they are fined under Section 59 of the Metro Railways Operations and Maintenance Act," said a Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd official.
