Mumbai Rains: Lakes get 3.5 months’ water in 4 days

Heavy downpour in the city’s outskirts brings 300 mm rainfall in just 24 hours, resulting in a sharp rise in the total water stock

The water stock in all lakes increased significantly within a day as it rained heavily outside the city limits. Modak Sagar and Tansa lakes started overflowing on Thursday. They had less than one-third of the stock four days ago. Meanwhile, Mahabaleshwar received the highest single-day rainfall in the country.

The lakes, located at the border of Thane and Palghar, received more than 300 mm rain in just 24 hours and the stock increased from 18 to 54 per cent within four days. The current stock is more than what it was on this day in 2020 and 2019.

On July 18, the combined water stock of all the seven lakes was 2,87,082 million litres (ML) (18 per cent), which increased to 5,31,734 ML on July 21 (37 per cent) after continuous rain. Within a day, the stock increased by another 17 per cent and reached 7,79,568 ML (on July 22). Now the lakes are filled up 54 per cent.

Modak Sagar started overflowing at 3.24 am. The lake was filled up to just 24 per cent of its capacity on Sunday. Tansa started overflowing at 5.48 am, it had 37 per cent of the stock on Sunday. Tulsi and Vihar lakes, which are in the city limits, have overflowed already.

Many places in Thane and Palghar districts received more than 200 mm rain. Mahabaleshwar recorded 480 mm rain, the highest one-day rainfall in the country on Thursday. Jawhar and Wada in Palghar received 434 mm and 418 mm rain respectively, Matheran 331 mm, Peth in Nashik 315 mm, Karjat 321 mm, Lonavala 313mm. Whereas, Santacruz and Colaba recorded 57 mm and 96 mm rain respectively.
