Mumbai rains: Heavy rainfall lashes parts of city, IMD issues orange alert

Heavy to very heavy rainfall continues to lash out Mumbai and adjoining areas on Thursday. As a result of this many areas in the city were inundated.

While Mumbai, which was put on yellow alert by the weather bureau, has now been upgraded to orange alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely), India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert (extremely heavy rainfall very likely) for neighbouring Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri.

"Mumbai Thane Navi Mumbai received heavy to very heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours. The impact is seen more in Thane and Navi Mumbai areas with rainfall exceeding 150 mm at many places. Take care of flood-like situations and also landslides in these areas please," tweeted K S Hosalikar - head, IMD, Pune.

In the last 24 hours ending on Thursday 8.30 am, IMD's Santacruz observatory (which represents suburbs) recorded a rainfall of 99 mm, whereas Colaba observatory (represents city) recorded a rainfall of 85 mm during the same time.

"The reason for such rains is attributed to the Cyclonic Circulation over the Gulf of Cambay and adjoining areas. There is also a convergence zone in association with the system in Central parts. The Offshore trough is an additional trigger. The upper half of the West Coast has been seeing active to vigorous Monsoon conditions. Both the Konkan region as well as Coastal Gujarat are expected to see heavy rainfall activities.," said meteorologists from Skymet Weather, a private weather forecasting agency.

Mahabaleshwar, Satara's famous hill station, recorded 315 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending on July 20, 8.30 am. Meanwhile, Dahanu recorded 305 mm of rainfall during the same period.

While Badlapur recorded 408 mm rainfall, Matheran recorded a rainfall of 398 mm.
