Rain may subside this week in Mumbai. The IMD has issued a green alert (no heavy rain) for Monday for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar. It has also forecast light rain on Tuesday. In the past 24 hours, the Western suburbs saw heavy rain in the Borivli-Dahisar belt, exceeding 100 mm.

The India Meteorological Department's Santacruz observatory recorded an average rainfall of 56 mm in the past 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Sunday, in comparison to the Colaba Observatory which recorded 15.8 mm of rain in the same period.

As per the data compiled by Vagaries of Weather, a popular private blog, using BMC and IMD data between Saturday at 8.30 am and Sunday at 8.30 am, Dahisar and Borivli recorded 103 mm and 108 mm rainfall respectively, followed by Kandivli with 91 mm, Andheri with 70 mm and Ram Mandir with 68 mm.

According to IMD, a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rainfall in the city and suburbs is likely on Monday and Tuesday. This season (from June 1 to September 10) the rainfall recorded by the IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories has been 1999.3 mm and 2574.1 mm, respectively.

"While there has been light rain on and off since Saturday, the overnight rain between Saturday and Sunday in the western suburbs was unexpected. Light rain is likely on Monday," said Rajesh Kapadia, of Vagaries of Weather.

The monsoon trough is presently passing through Ganganagar, Hisar, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Gaya, Ranchi, Balasore, and then southeast wards to the East Central Bay of Bengal. "Due to this weather system light to moderate rain with one or two heavy spells is possible over parts of north Maharashtra. Light rain is possible over Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and parts of south Madhya (central) Maharashtra," said a meteorologist from Skymet weather, a private weather forecasting agency.
