Mumbai: Project supervisor arrested over house collapse in Kurla

The Kandivli Police have arrested the manager- cum- site supervisor of the "Mansi construction company" in connection with death of a four-year-old boy after a portion of a house collapsed in Kurla.

The accused has been identified as Arvind Goswami and was produced before the Borivali Metropolitan Magistrate court on March 27. He has been sent to two-day police custody.

The incident, which also left three people injured, took place at KD compound area around 4 pm on March 26 when the drainage work was going on. A JCB machine deployed by Mansi construction company was digging the drain due to which two houses collapsed. The contact was given to build the drain to this company by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

While 4-year-old Naushad Ali Shah died on the spot, his mother, Hasina Shah (22), two-month-old younger brother Saif and the house owner Shahidunnisa Rain (30), sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

At the time of the accident, Naushad was on the ground floor of the house with his mother and two-month-old brother, while the owner was on the first floor of the house.

The local people started the relief and rescue work before the arrival of the police and fire department.

After arriving on the site, the police and fire team rushed the injured to the Shatabdi hospital, where the doctors declared Naushad dead on arrival. Meanwhile, Saif was rushed to Children's hospital in Evershine Nagar and he is stable, said an officer.

Speaking with mid-day, Shahzad Shah, the uncle of the deceased boy, said, "We were all about to reach the factory after having lunch, when we received the information about the collapse. The excavation done by JCB machine was being carried out close to the foundation of the house, which probably led to the collapse," he added. Shahzad has a glass business in the same locality and, at the time of the incident, he was with Shamsad (father of the victim) at their workshop.

"We have arrested the accused on the charges of 304 (2) (death of any person by doing any rash or negligent). He was produced before the court and later remanded to police custody," said senior police inspector Dinkar Jadhav.
